TROUBLE IN THE END TIMES
Key verse: 14
NIV
The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)(B)
5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(C) every one of them will be thrown down.”
7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(D) 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(E) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(F)
12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(G) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(H) 15 For I will give you(I) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(J) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(K) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(L) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(M)

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
5 (A)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, 6 “As for these things that you see, (B)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” 7 And they asked him, “Teacher, (C)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8 And he said, (D)“See that you are not led astray. For (E)many will come in my name, saying, (F)‘I am he!’ and, (G)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be (H)terrified, for these things (I)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”
Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution
10 Then he said to them, (J)“Nation will rise against nation, and (K)kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great (L)earthquakes, and in various places (M)famines and pestilences. And there will be (N)terrors and great (O)signs from heaven. 12 But before all this (P)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to (Q)the synagogues and (R)prisons, and you (S)will be brought before (T)kings and (U)governors for my name's sake. 13 (V)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds (W)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for (X)I will give you a mouth and (Y)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or (Z)contradict. 16 You will be delivered up (AA)even by parents and brothers[a] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 (AB)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But (AC)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your (AD)endurance you will gain your lives.

1. Fearful signs will appear (5-11)
Jesus shook his disciples out of their infatuation with the Jerusalem temple's beauty with a prophecy of its destruction. They realized Jesus was talking about the end times and asked him what the signs of the end would be. Jesus predicted wars and natural disasters but warned his disciples not to be deceived by false teachers who feed on people's fear in difficult times. These types of events do not mean that the end will come right away.
2. Stand firm in persecution (12-19)
Jesus also warned his disciples that persecution would come against them personally. They would have to stand before the highest authorities for Jesus' sake. But we don't have to worry beforehand about how to defend ourselves because, at such moments, Jesus gives undefeatable words and wisdom. The most painful persecution is from our own friends and family. But even if everyone hates us, we can win the victory by standing firm.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for knowing everything that will happen and for teaching us to take strength from you. Give me confidence that can reveal you to others in troubled times.
One Word: Don't worry beforehand; stand firm
